A Child's Story

Tillaigavathy, 10 years old, 5th standard

How long have you been in PremaHome?
I have been here for 3 years.

Do you have parents?
No I don't have parents.

Do you know what happened to them?
What my aunt told me is that my mother ran away from my father because she could not bear him beating her. She took me and my small brother with her, but she had no money and did not know what to do. So she ate a poisonous fruit and died. Some time later my father also died at work, he fell into a well.

How did you come to PremaHome?
An old lady told my aunt that there was a place where we could stay, so she brought us here.

Do you like the teachers and volunteers and other children?
The class teacher is very friendly. She tells us many nice stories. The aunties and uncles (this is what the children call the volunteers) are also nice. I have a best friend, her name is Sasikala. We always play together.

What do you like best in PremaHome?
I like to go to school. I want to study and become an engineer when I am big. That is why I want to study a lot. We also get nice food. I have many friends and we can play many games. I also like it when we go on a tour in the summer holidays. Then we have so much fun.

Where did you go and what did you do on the last trip in the holidays?
We ate a big ice cream. This was in Pondicherry. The aunties made tea and served the food to us. They also cooked lunch for us. It tasted very good. They also made kasari (an Indian sweet) for us. We visited the famous temple in Tanjavur. When we went to Pondicherry we also saw a temple like a big ball (the Matrimandir in Auroville). In Auroville we went to the beach. There we had so much fun in the water. One aunty lost my shawl, but afterwards she bought me a new one. We saw a film at the cinema. It was so much fun!
