The children who are cared for and brought up in PremaHome are all from the most deprived sections of society. Many from families of small-scale farmers or agricultural labourers. Some are orphans and many have only one parent due to illness, an accident at work, alcohol abuse or, as frequently happens, because their mother committed suicide. Many of the children come from a broken home and come to the Home traumatized by what they have seen and experienced in their short past. Often their parents or relatives are not able or simply do not want to look after the children or give them an education.
Normally children in their situation are obliged to find employment as soon as they are "fit for work", which means around the age of ten or twelve. They work as cheap hired labour in fields, factories, restaurants or on building sites.
